Remove Aquarium Fish Common Disease ( Home make Garlic Formula ) Urdu and Hindi Ammonia poisoning Though not a disease, ammonia poisoning is a common problem in fish tanks – especially new ones. It can cause high levels of stress in your fish and lead to other health issues including bacterial disorders. If you see your fish gasping at the surface with red or inflamed gills, they may have ammonia poisoning. The water in their tank may appear murky, which is an indicator that the water hasn’t been ‘cycled’. To treat this condition, test the water for ammonia and pH, and check the water temperature. A 30 to 50 per cent water change is advised and you need to repeat this within 24 hours as necessary. Clean the gravel in your fish tank with a gravel siphon and make sure you’re using high-quality food that’s not out of date. To prevent this condition avoid overfeeding, overcrowding and ensure your filtration system is working well. Cotton mouth This bacterial infection can affect cold-water and tropical fish. It’s sometimes confused with a fungal infection because of the appearance of white or greyish white spots on the fish’s head, though usually this infection starts as a pale area around the head and mouth. This may turn yellow/brownish in colour with red-tinged edges. Bacteria generally affects the fish’s mouth, but lesions can appear on the back that look like a saddle on the fish’s body. Some ways to treat this condition include a 30 per cent to 50 per cent water change with a siphon of the tank’s gravel. Aquarium salt can be used, but ensure that your fish can tolerate it (see below). You can use Furan 2, Melafix or a vet-prescribed antibiotic. In addition, you should remove the carbon from your tank’s filter during treatment. This infection is one of the reasons you need to use a quarantine tank [link to quarantine tank/aquarium salt article] when introducing new fish to your established aquarium. Dropsy Usually fatal to fish, Dropsy is characterised by a swelling of your fish’s abdomen, sometimes causing their scales to stick out. Your fish will appear listless and lose their appetite. If you’re unsure if your fish has Dropsy, quarantine them them immediately and take them to your local Greencross Vets. Maintaining your fish tank’s water quality is key to keeping your fish safe from this condition. Also, be sure to feed your fish high-quality food and avoid overcrowding them. Test the water frequently and observe your fish for signs of stress. Fin/tail rot If you see that your fish’s fins or tail are frayed and the edges appear white, then they may be rotting. Your fish may also settle at the bottom of the tank and stop eating. This can be caused by poor water quality, but it can start with bullying from other fish. If your fish is being bullied, you should move them to the quarantine tank. Fungal infections Fungal infections are one of the most common disorders for fish. Fungal spores naturally populate fish tanks, but sick, stressed or injured fish can cause a dangerous increase. These infections manifest as a white cotton-wool-like growth on the skin, mouth, fins or gills. This condition is normally a secondary problem, so it will need a two-part treatment. You’ll first have to treat the underlying disease or injury via the infected fish spending time in the quarantine tank. Then go about cleaning your tank. A 30 to 50 per cent water change and a siphon of the tank’s gravel is necessary. Aquarium salt can be used, provided your fish can tolerate it and an anti-fungal agent will serve you well. Be sure you always treat your tank hygienically by regularly changing your nets. Always wash and rinse your hands prior to and after handling the tank’s elements. Hole in the head Cichlids, and in particular Discus and Oscars are the fish breeds most commonly affected by this disorder. The colors of this aquarium crayfish can grow more vibrant over time, and they look great against a black background and black gravel. Feeding Hammers Cobalt Blue Lobster Hammers Cobalt Blue Lobsters are not fussy eaters. They are great scavengers and eat almost everything on the bottom of a tank. Their diet includes uneaten food, debris, detritus, live plants, dead plants, fish flakes, pellets, tablets, algae wafers, live tank mates and even dead tank mates. Even though they will eat dead tank mates, its best to remove them from the tank to avoid water quality issues, as well as the spread of diseases. Finally, make sure they are getting Calcium in their diet. Calcium is important for molting and healthy shell growth. 2 Use vegetables to supplement your crayfish’s diet. Every now and then, cut some leaf lettuce, cabbage, zucchini, or cucumber into small strips and drop them to the bottom of the tank. Offerings like peas, carrots, and sweet potatoes are also okay. Crayfish love munching on plant matter, so don’t be surprised if they disappear in a hurry![9] It’s perfectly fine for crayfish to eat spoiled or decaying organic matter. In fact, treating your crayfish to veggies that are going bad is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. 3 Avoid overfeeding your crayfish. One or two shakes of shrimp pellets or a smattering of vegetables per day should be more than enough to keep your crayfish satisfied. Remove any uneaten portions of food soon after feeding your crayfish. Anything left sitting at the bottom of the tank will quickly decompose, dirtying the water and making more frequent changes necessary.[10] If you're caring for more than one crayfish (which isn’t recommended), it’s okay to double the amount of food you administer. Still, keep an eye out for leftovers and scoop them out whatever remnants you find quickly. Overeating can actually be bad for crayfish, as it causes their exoskeletons to become soft and weak. The colors of this aquarium crayfish can grow more vibrant over time, and they look great against a black background and black gravel. Feeding Hammers Cobalt Blue Lobster Hammers Cobalt Blue Lobsters are not fussy eaters. They are great scavengers and eat almost everything on the bottom of a tank. Their diet includes uneaten food, debris, detritus, live plants, dead plants, fish flakes, pellets, tablets, algae wafers, live tank mates and even dead tank mates. Even though they will eat dead tank mates, its best to remove them from the tank to avoid water quality issues, as well as the spread of diseases. Finally, make sure they are getting Calcium in their diet. Calcium is important for molting and healthy shell growth. 1 Buy or catch a crayfish. You can often find crayfish for purchase at marine shops that sell tropical fish, as well as some pet stores. Before you start shopping around, do a little reading on the different species and their individual needs. It’s a good idea to start with a single crayfish until you have an understanding of how to properly look after them.[1] Crayfish usually go for $20, or more. With the rarer varieties, they can for $30 or even more! In some parts of the world, you can catch crayfish in streams or other shallow bodies of water. Just grab a small net and start hunting under rocks until you spot one that will make a suitable pet.[2] Image titled Take Care of Crayfish Step 2 2 Set up a tank to house your crayfish. Generally speaking, the tank you choose should be large enough to hold at least 5–10 gallons (19–38 L) for each crayfish inside. However, a 15–20 US gal (57–76 L) tank is ideal, especially for larger varieties. An air bubbler or long bubble wall is also a must, as it’s possible for crayfish to drown if they stay submerged for too long without a separate source of oxygen.[3] Crayfish thrive in cool conditions like mud flats and riverbeds, so stay away from heated aquariums. Look for tanks that feature built-in aeration and filtration units to keep the water clean and circulating properly. Image titled Take Care of Crayfish Step 3 3 Fill the tank with fresh, well-balanced water. Crayfish prefer water with a neutral pH (around 7.0). Ideally, the temperature of the water should remain somewhere between 70–75 °F (21–24 °C). You should have no problem keeping the water at the right temperature if you’ve set up your tank indoors.[4] A pH testing kit can come in handy for determining how acidic or basic the water in your tank is. You can typically find these kits in the fish section at pet stores, or wherever pool supplies are sold. Avoid adding objects like seashells to your tank, as foreign minerals can throw off the pH of the water. Image titled Take Care of Crayfish Step 4 4 Change the water in the tank at least once a week. Crayfish generate large amounts of waste products that can be taxing on standard aquarium filtration systems. This means you’ll need to stay on top of your water changes in order to ensure that you crayfish enjoys a clean living environment. To change the water in your tank, first drain ¼-½ of its total volume, then slowly top it off with fresh, clean water.[5] If your tank doesn’t have a filter, it may be necessary to increase the frequency of your water changes to twice a week.
